Love of Sport and Community - Quiet about his Unselfish Contributions
Frank Lockhart came to Wetaskiwin in 1962 as a Physical
Education teacher at the Wetaskiwin Composite High School. He taught and
coached football, basketball, track and field, badminton and wrestling.
He spent eight years working and training High School students to become
better athletes. Following his High School sojourn he moved into the
Elementary School system as an administrator where he continued
to teach
Physical Education.
Coaching Within the
community
From 1970 to the present Frank has spent much of his spare time coaching
young people within the community or being involved with organizations
that cater to young athletes. Frank was an assistant Minor Hockey coach
from 1973 – 1977. He coached T-Ball from 1972 to 1975. During the
summers from 1969 to 1972 he was the Sports Director for the Penhold
Summer camps.
Between Coaching Stints
Between coaching stints Frank also found time to be a
member of the Wetaskiwin Curling Club and the Wetaskiwin Golf Club. He
served on the golf course executive, has represented the Men’s Senior
Interclub on the North Central Alberta Interclub Golf Association. Frank
also served three years as treasurer for the Colonel’s Hockey Club.
In 1993 Frank was a Summer Games Assistant. During North
Am Winter Events he assisted with all the events, was chairman of Cross
Country Skiing results in the Wetaskiwin Special Olympics and was
chairman of Registration and Results for the Alberta Summer Senior’s
Games.
Frank Stepped up to Fill the Void
Frank has not only been involved directly with athletes
he has given of his time in other ways. From 1962 to 1972 he served as
#42 Air Cadet Squadron Officer. He has spent 15 years as a Fish and Game
member and he has also spent 26 years as Chairman and Director of Ducks
Unlimited.
When Frank retired from teaching the Wetaskiwin Legion
asked him to come on board to manage the Legion with the idea of getting
their financial matters computerized as well as point them in a positive
financial direction. Frank was able to accomplish this task which was
very important to the youth of this community. The Legion has been a
great supporter of many sports teams within this jurisdiction.
Frank has never been one to make a lot of noise about
what he has done. It is obvious from the above that when there was a
void that needed to be filled Frank stepped up in usual quiet manner and
took care of things.
Wetaskiwin Sports Hall of Fame thanks you Frank for all
that you have done for both the young people and the not so young.
