"I personally never had opportunities to play
sports. I lived my dreams as I watched the kids play."
Often, Cec organized pick‑up softball games. In minor
sports he coached or assisted ball and hockey teams. He often drove kids
to the arena for very‑early morning hockey practices, and drove team
players to out‑of‑town games.
Both Cec and Doris were involved with the Wetaskiwin
Colonels Hockey team every year they competed from 1953 to 1958 when the
arena was torn down and from 1962 to 1978. Cec served in every
executive and duties at the rink in several other capacities, and Doris
was at the gate in charge of ticket sales, programs, and in general
keeping order. They seldom missed the Colonels' out of town games.
"We'll help out... Count
on us... we will do it."
Cec and Doris Colwell
Active Volunteers from 1953 to 1988
Those are powerful words -
the Colwell's exemplify the meaning of volunteer commitment and deserve
this special award for their distinguished service to the community.
