CHAMPIONS SPEAK - 2018 Hall of Fame Inductee Rod Fonteyne - Athlete
by Val Fonteyne
Good evening everyone.
I am here
tonight to accept my brother Rod’s plaque of induction into
the Wetaskiwin and County Sports Hall of Fame on behalf of
Rod’s wife Larra. Unfortunately, Larra was not able to
be here tonight but asked me to convey her gratitude
for the honour given to Rod. I’m only sorry that Rod wasn’t
here to accept this award himself. He would have been very
proud and honoured. Rod spent most of his life in Fort St.
John but always considered Wetaskiwin his home, hence when
he passed away his wish was to be buried here.
I would like
to thank Bill Mojelski for all the work he put in to making
this award possible. About a year ago, Bill contacted me
and asked what I thought of nominating my brother into our
Sports Hall of Fame. Of course I thought it was a great
idea and I was only too happy to help. I knew the teams
Rod played for but didn’t know his stats in detail. Roddy
was never one to talk about what he had accomplished with
these teams. When I saw the final transcript Bill had done,
I couldn’t believe it. He had Rod’s goals, assists, and
awards for every team he had ever played for. I learned a
lot more about Rod's career from Bill than the help he got
from me. Thank you Bill.
Congratulations to all the other well deserving inductees.
On behalf of Larra and my family I would like to thank
president Sandy Wright and the committee of the Wetaskiwin
and County Sports Hall of Fame and all those involved in
making this such a fine evening.
Thank you.
