As you can tell from the
program Frank came to Wetaskiwin in 1962 to teach Physical
Education at the Composite High School. Frank was not the
only one involved with sporting activities but in talking
with other teachers they will tell you the equipment and all
the necessary things required for a sporting activity would
be laid out and made ready for them. Frank continues to do
that today for all people that he is involved with. He has a
genuine concern to make your experience to be as pleasurable
as possible, thus enhancing benefits to be derived be it
children or adults.
Frank’s coaching activities
did not just pertain to schools but to the community as a
whole – he coached minor hockey, minor ball and was involved
in numerous sporting activities. During the summers of 1969
to 72, he was a Squadron leader at Penhold for Air Cadets.
He was a Sports Director during those summers. Rumor has it
that he noticed during one of these summers he was putting
on a little bit of weight and so it was decided that between
his friend Ed and himself that if he had a beer and salad
for lunch this would take care of the weight problem.
Suffice to say he felt good but he didn’t lose any weight.
Maybe he should have consulted a dietitian.
Frank says he loved to curl
but according to Baker, Trost and Tobin they “allowed” him
to curl with the understanding that he would carry the
brooms and look after the bar. With friends like that you
don’t need any enemies do you? Over the years Frank has
been totally involved with the Summer Games, the Special
Olympics and the Senior’s Games doing whatever was asked of
him. I should mention that on many of these occasions he
was ably assisted by his wife Janice.
As many of you know Frank was
Principal of Parkdale School and during that time he was
very much involved with Ducks Unlimited. This was the
outdoor sportmen side of Frank and he loved to go goose
hunting. Legend has it that Frank would go goose hunting in
the early morning wearing a shirt and tie. This enabled
Frank to hunt and be back at school by 8:00 AM.
That’s what you call burning
the candle at both ends!
Speaking of being outdoors
Frank loved to go fishing up North to one of Hank Colborne’s
fishing lodges. Frank would fish with Walt Klause and they
would spend the entire day out on the lake. I heard rumors
about how many fish they caught and what a great time they
had. Being that they are only rumors it is not for me to go
into further detail. One of the things that is not mentioned
in the program is that during those years when Frank was
extremely busy looking after young people, he found time to
be the Kiwanis District Governor for Western Canada.
Frank’s involvement in sports
throughout the years has benefited both young and old
in this community. The people of Wetaskiwin and area thank
you for all that you have done and it is an honor to induct
you into the Sports Hall of Fame.
